Double-Fleece Uncoupling Membrane for Tile Protection

MAXKOSKO Double-Fleece Uncoupling Membrane is designed for ceramic, porcelain, and stone tile installations where long-term crack prevention, waterproofing, and reliable bonding are required.

Featuring a three-layer structure with a waterproof PVC core and nonwoven fleece layers on both sides, this membrane helps reduce tile and grout cracking caused by movement between the substrate and tile covering.

Compared with a standard crack prevention underlayment mat, this upgraded design provides additional uncoupling protection, stronger bonding performance, and improved moisture management.

Uncoupling Protection

Helps absorb stresses caused by substrate movement, reducing the risk of tile and grout cracks.

Double-Fleece Bonding

Nonwoven fleece layers provide strong mechanical bonding with thin-set mortar for secure tile installation.

Waterproof Core

The waterproof membrane layer helps protect moisture-sensitive substrates when properly installed and sealed.

Vapor Management

Integrated channels allow residual moisture vapor to escape and improve installation reliability.

Load Distribution

Mortar-filled cavities help distribute loads evenly and provide stable support beneath tile surfaces.

High Tensile Strength

Three-layer construction provides improved tear resistance and long-lasting durability.

Important Before Ordering

Before Installation

Compatible Applications: Designed for ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tile installations.

Required Substrate: The substrate must be flat, stable, clean, and free from dust, grease, or loose materials.

Waterproofing Requirements: For waterproof installations, seams, corners, and transitions must be properly sealed.

Professional Installation: Always follow local building codes, tile manufacturer recommendations, and thin-set mortar instructions.

Installation

MAXKOSKO Uncoupling Membrane is installed between the substrate and tile covering using suitable thin-set mortar. Proper substrate preparation and installation procedures are essential for long-term performance.

Step 1: Prepare the Substrate

Clean and inspect the installation surface. The substrate should be flat, stable, and free of dust, grease, or loose materials.

Step 2: Apply Thin-Set Mortar

Spread suitable thin-set mortar evenly over the prepared substrate using an appropriate notched trowel.

Step 3: Install the Membrane

Place the membrane onto fresh mortar and press firmly to achieve full contact. Ensure proper alignment before tile installation.

Step 4: Install Tile

Apply thin-set mortar over the membrane and install ceramic, porcelain, or stone tiles according to tile manufacturer requirements.

Installation Notes

Reverse-Wound Design: The membrane can be unrolled directly onto the mortar bed without flipping or repositioning, helping improve installation efficiency.

Movement Joints: Required movement joints should be maintained at edges, transitions, and large tiled areas according to industry practices.

Installation Temperature: Recommended installation temperature range is 41°F to 95°F (5°C to 35°C).

Professional Installation: Always follow local building codes, tile manufacturer recommendations, and thin-set mortar manufacturer instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an uncoupling membrane used for?

An uncoupling membrane helps separate the tile layer from substrate movement. It reduces stress transfer between the substrate and tile covering, helping prevent tile and grout cracking.

How is this different from the MAXKOSKO Crack Prevention Underlayment Mat?

The Double-Fleece Uncoupling Membrane is an upgraded solution featuring a three-layer structure with fleece bonding layers on both sides. Compared with the standard crack prevention mat, it provides additional uncoupling protection, waterproofing support, vapor management, and load distribution performance.

For basic crack prevention applications, you can also view our Tile Crack Prevention Underlayment Mat .

Can this membrane be used for waterproof tile installations?

Yes. The waterproof core helps provide moisture protection when seams, corners, and transitions are properly sealed according to installation requirements.

What types of tiles can be installed over this membrane?

It is designed for ceramic tile, porcelain tile, and natural stone tile installations when used with suitable thin-set mortar.

Can this membrane be installed over plywood or concrete floors?

Yes. It can be used over approved substrates including plywood, OSB, concrete, gypsum underlayment, and radiant heated floors when properly prepared.

Does this membrane replace proper substrate preparation?

No. The substrate must still be structurally sound, flat, and properly prepared before installation. The membrane helps manage movement but does not correct structural issues.

Perfect for small renovation projects!

"I used this for a small bathroom remodel and it was a total game-changer. The mat is very easy to handle and cut to size."

Jason (5/5)

good product

"really liked it"

Natasha (5/5)

Easy to work with

"The instructions were simple. I’ve never used a uncoupling membrane before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I found it easy to cut with a utility knife or scissors. It glued down easily and seems durable and once installed will be difficult to penetrate. The yellow color helps identify any gaps and it is easy to cut straight lines because of the geometric honeycomb pattern."
