Q1: What type of thinset mortar should I use with the uncoupling membrane? Should I use the same type under and over the membrane?
A1: For bonding the membrane to the subfloor (e.g., wood or concrete): Use a modified thinset mortar (compliant with ANSI A118.11).
For bonding tiles to the membrane:Use an unmodified thinset mortar (compliant with ANSI A118.1) to ensure proper curing and bonding.
Different types of thinset mortar are required for each layer to optimize performance and durability.
Q2: Can I use a self-leveling compound on top of the membrane to fill the gaps before tiling?
A2: We do not recommend applying a self-leveling compound over the membrane. The membrane is specifically designed to function with thinset mortar and tiles applied directly on top. If floor leveling is necessary, it should be completed prior to installing the membrane. Applying a self-leveling compound on the membrane may compromise its performance and effectiveness.
When using an uncoupling membrane for floor heating cables, it's important to select an Modified Thin-Set Mortar. Follow the mortar manufacturer's instructions for mixing ratios, coverage, and thickness. Ensure that the selected mortar has good temperature resistance to accommodate the variations in temperature that may occur with the floor heating system. Uncoupling membranes are often used in tile installations to prevent cracks in the tile and grout caused by movement or expansion in the substrate.
