120V Self-Regulating Roof & Gutter De-Icing Cable Kit

MAXKOSKO Roof & Gutter De-Icing Cable helps maintain a meltwater drainage path along roof edges, gutters, and downspouts, reducing conditions that can contribute to ice dams, icicles, and winter water backup.

The self-regulating heating cable automatically adjusts its heat output according to the surrounding temperature. Each kit includes a fixed-length heating cable, roof clips, cable spacers, and an additional 10 ft power cord.

Self-Regulating Heat

Produces more heat in colder conditions and reduces output as temperatures become warmer.

6W/ft Rated Output

Rated at approximately 6 watts per foot at 50°F (10°C) for roof and gutter de-icing applications.

Installation Hardware Included

Includes compatible roof clips and cable spacers for routing the cable on the roof and through gutters.

10 ft Power Cord

The power cord provides additional reach and is not deducted from the selected heating cable length.

Important Before Ordering

Confirm the Length and Roof Application

Prevents Ice Buildup: This cable creates a path for melting snow and ice to drain. It is not designed to remove existing ice dams or melt accumulated roof snow.

Fixed-Length Cable: Choose the correct length before ordering. Do not cut, shorten, splice, paint, glue, or otherwise modify the heating cable.

Heating Length Only: The selected size refers to the heated cable section. The attached 10 ft power cord is additional.

Compatible Roofs: Designed primarily for compatible inclined asphalt-shingle and metal roof systems, as well as metal or plastic gutters and downspouts.

Self-Regulating Is Not Automatic Shutoff: The cable adjusts its output but may continue drawing power. Disconnect it during warm weather or use a compatible automatic roof de-icing controller.

120V GFCI Outlet Required: Connect only to a grounded, weather-protected 120V outlet with code-compliant ground-fault protection. An extension cord is not recommended.

Do Not Use a Damaged Cable: Replace the complete cable if it becomes cut, crushed, brittle, burned, or otherwise damaged.

What Is Included

How to Choose the Cable Length View Guide Hide Guide

Calculate the complete cable route rather than ordering only according to the width of the roof.

  • Include the triangular cable pattern along the roof edge.
  • Add cable required around dormers, skylights, and problem areas.
  • Add approximately 6 ft for each roof valley requiring protection.
  • For gutter-only applications, calculate approximately two times the gutter length.
  • For downspouts, calculate approximately two times the downspout length when routing the cable down and back up.
  • Use a separate cable when problem areas are far apart or cannot be connected safely with one continuous route.

Do Not Purchase Excess Cable

The heating cable cannot be shortened. Select a length that can be installed completely without crossing, tightly bending, or leaving heated cable coiled.

Review the complete installation manual and its roof-overhang calculation tables before selecting your final length.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this cable melt all the snow on the roof?

No. It is designed to create drainage paths through snow and ice. It does not remove accumulated roof snow or eliminate an ice dam that has already formed.

Are roof clips and cable spacers included?

Yes. The kit includes roof clips and cable spacers for compatible roof, gutter, and downspout installations.

Does the selected length include the 10 ft power cord?

No. The selected size is the heating cable length. The attached 10 ft power cord provides additional non-heating reach.

Can the heating cable be cut if it is too long?

No. Do not cut, shorten, splice, paint, glue, or otherwise modify the cable. Measure the complete installation route before ordering.

Does self-regulating cable switch itself completely off?

No. It adjusts its heat output according to temperature but may continue consuming power. Use a compatible controller or disconnect power when de-icing is not required.

What type of outlet is required?

Use a grounded, weather-protected 120V outdoor outlet with ground-fault protection. The outlet should be within reach of the attached 10 ft power cord.

Before Installation

Read the complete installation manual before attaching or powering the cable. Confirm the roof type, required length, cable layout, outlet location, ground-fault protection, and included hardware before beginning installation.

Questions & Answers

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • Your advert says the cable can be used on metal roofs however the instruction booklet manual that comes with the cable says not to use on metal roofs roofs which is correct

    Hi Brain,

Thank you so much for your questions!

The product you mentioned should be our constant-voltage heating cable for roofs. The instruction manual states it is not for use on metal roofs mainly for two reasons:

    1. Included accessories – The clips and mounting hardware we supply are designed for shingle/asphalt roofs, not for metal surfaces. If you do not plan to use these accessories, this limitation may not apply.

    2. Certification testing – During the official safety and performance certification process, we did not specifically test the cable on metal roofs. Because of this, the manual does not list metal roofs as an approved application.

That said, the cable itself is not inherently unsafe on metal roofs; it’s more a matter of accessory compatibility and certification scope. You can make your own judgment depending on your installation method.

    Best regards,

  • What amp circuit is needed?

    Dear Bob,

    Thank you for your question.

Typically, a 20A circuit breaker is required. If you can let me know the length you need, I can help you calculate the most suitable options. If you have any further questions, feel free to email us at maxkosko@maxkosko.com.
